5 Playful Memories from Childhood Summers
There was something magical about summer as a kid. The days felt endless, the sunshine invited us outside, and the only real responsibility was making it home before dark. Looking back, some of my favorite memories aren’t from extravagant vacations or expensive activities—they’re from the simple moments that made childhood so special.
Here are five of my favorite childhood summer memories.
1. Swinging on the Swing Set in New Sharon, Iowa
One of my happiest memories is spending countless hours on the swing set in New Sharon. I would pump my legs higher and higher, imagining I could touch the clouds. There was something incredibly peaceful about feeling the warm breeze on my face and listening to the familiar creak of the swings as I soared through the air.
2. Rollerblading in Our Driveway in Pella, Iowa
When we lived in Pella, our driveway became my own little skating rink. I’d lace up my rollerblades and spend hours cruising back and forth, practicing stopping, turning, and trying to look just a little bit cooler each day. It was simple fun, but at the time it felt like the greatest adventure.
3. Playing Games with Spencer in Missouri
Summers in Missouri meant spending time with Spencer. Whether we were making up games, playing outside, or finding creative ways to keep ourselves entertained, we always managed to have fun together. Looking back, I realize it wasn’t the games themselves that made those memories so meaningful—it was simply spending time together and enjoying the carefree days of childhood.
4. Playing Outside with My Cousins in South Dakota
Whenever we visited South Dakota, I couldn’t wait to see my cousins. We’d spend hours outside running, laughing, inventing games, and making memories together. Those family visits always felt like one big adventure, and I cherish the joy of simply being kids together.
5. Riding My Bike on the Gravel Driveway in New Sharon, Iowa
Some of my favorite afternoons were spent riding my bike up and down our gravel driveway in New Sharon. The gravel wasn’t always the easiest surface to ride on, but that didn’t matter. My bike represented freedom, exploration, and the excitement that seemed to come with every summer day.
Looking Back
As adults, it’s easy to believe that happiness requires elaborate plans or expensive experiences. But these memories remind me that some of life’s greatest joys come from the simplest moments: swinging high into the sky, riding a bike, playing with cousins, or laughing with a friend on a warm summer afternoon.
Those ordinary days became extraordinary memories—and I’m grateful for every one of them.
